Malaysian Government's Initiative
The Malaysia Government recognises that the current practices of industry and consumers are unsustainable and will impact negatively on the quality of life of the present and future generations, if unabated. As Malaysia aims to become a high income and fully developed which is both inclusive and sustainable by 2020, SCP is evidently the perfect match with Malaysia’s development agenda. The Malaysian Government thus initiated the “Sustainable Consumption and Production (‘SCP’) Policy Support Malaysia Project” on 2012.
EPU as National SCP focal point
The Economic Planning Unit (‘EPU’) of the Prime Minister’s Department serves as the National SCP focal point and coordinates the “SCP Policy Support Malaysia” project, which is financially supported by the European Union. The Environment and Natural Resource Economic Section (‘ENRES) of EPU is the coordinating entity and is assisted by a team international and national experts.
The main result of the project will be input for the 11th Malaysia Plan (covering development in Malaysia from 2016 to 2020) and a National SCP Blueprint (which will provide the guiding framework for SCP in Malaysia until 2030).
The SCP policy support project is implemented in conjunction with 17 key government agencies who form the core working group. The project has grown to be a major national initiative called “SCP Malaysia” and involves dozens of government ministries and agencies, industry and civil society as partners and stakeholders.
